Women's Rights Advocate Pushes for Harassment Act Enforcement

In a powerful statement, Nagalakshmi Choudhary, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women, has urged the implementation of a critical law to protect women in the workplace. Speaking at a training program in Shivamogga, she emphasized the need to enforce the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, across all government and private institutions. This move aims to ensure women can work in a safe and peaceful environment, free from the fear of harassment.

Choudhary's address, part of a collaborative effort with various local authorities, including the district administration, zilla panchayat, police, and the department of women and child development, stressed the importance of awareness. She encouraged women to utilize the government's provisions and understand their rights under this Act. The event aimed to educate and empower women, ensuring they know how to lead dignified lives and seek redressal for any workplace harassment.

The chairperson also highlighted the mandatory nature of the Act, requiring employers to establish safe working conditions and internal complaint committees to address sexual harassment concerns promptly. In a broader initiative, the Commission launched the Koodi Balona couple counselling program, addressing marital issues related to dowry demands, which often lead to mental distress and relationship breakdowns.

With a focus on women's empowerment, Nagalakshmi Choudhary's efforts in Shivamogga are a significant step towards ensuring women's rights and safety in the workplace and beyond. This initiative promises to bring about positive change, fostering an environment where women can thrive, free from harassment and discrimination.
