The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) are significantly increasing their humanitarian response in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Djibouti due to severe needs exacerbated by the Tigray conflict. The ICRC has launched an urgent appeal for 20 million Swiss francs to address the dire situation in Tigray, where conflict has displaced thousands and overwhelmed healthcare systems. The IFRC has requested 27 million Swiss francs to support local Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in these countries.
In Ethiopia, the conflict has led to severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, with many healthcare facilities damaged or abandoned. The ICRC is expanding its operations in Mekelle and Shire and has provided essential services including water, medical aid, and food distribution. The IFRC is aiding 660,000 people through its partners, focusing on health, sanitation, and emergency relief.
In Sudan, the Sudanese Red Crescent is providing crucial support to refugees from Tigray, while in Djibouti, the Djibouti Red Crescent is working to improve water and sanitation services and raise COVID-19 awareness.
These coordinated efforts highlight the critical role of humanitarian organizations in responding to escalating crises and delivering aid to those in urgent need.
