Indian Red Cross Society Annual Meeting Highlights Increased Focus on Global Relief and Blood Donation

At the Indian Red Cross Society's (IRCS) Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre and attended by over 300 delegates, President Smt. Droupadi Murmu emphasized the need for the organization to enhance its global relief efforts. This meeting, the first in-person AGM in six years due to the pandemic, saw participation from governors, lieutenant governors, and the Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, who is also the IRCS Chairman.

Dr. Mandaviya called for the IRCS to extend its relief programs beyond Indian borders, aiming for greater efficiency and transparency. He announced plans for state branches to report monthly via presentations to governors, enhancing accountability and outreach. The AGM also highlighted the IRCS’s significant role in blood donation, with President Murmu urging members to dispel myths surrounding blood donation and engage more youth in this cause. The society meets about 10% of India's blood needs through over 100 centers and mobile campaigns.

Notable awards included the Red Cross Gold Medals for Dr. LN Ambati Natraj and Dr. Goparaju Samaram. The IRCS Odisha branch was recognized for the highest fund-raising, and Gujarat State branch was honored for its exceptional blood donation efforts, collecting over 277,000 units. The meeting underscored the IRCS’s commitment to humanitarian service and its expanding global role.
