Red Cross Volunteers Lead Efforts in COVID-19 Response

In the fight against COVID-19, Red Cross volunteers have emerged as critical frontliners, delivering vital services and support globally. The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), working in coordination with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has mobilized a substantial volunteer force to combat the pandemic's effects across India.

The IRCS has deployed over 40,000 volunteers nationwide, providing essential resources such as food, health supplies, and sanitary items. These volunteers are also pivotal in spreading information about disease prevention, including hygiene practices and social distancing. Yahia Alibi, head of the ICRC regional delegation in New Delhi, praised the volunteers for their bravery and commitment, noting their role in running community kitchens and supporting isolation centers.

To safeguard the volunteers, the ICRC has supplied personal protective equipment, including masks and gloves. The IRCS, with its extensive network, continues to work closely with local authorities to address the pandemic's challenges, ensuring a steady supply of blood and other critical services.

Red Cross volunteers like Ashima Kayal and Sarthak Sorathiya exemplify the organization's dedication. Kayal’s team in West Bengal is actively distributing sanitizers and masks, while Sorathiya in Gujarat has been a consistent blood donor, supporting local blood donation efforts.

The unified response by these volunteers highlights the essential role of humanitarian aid in managing global crises, reinforcing the Red Cross’s commitment to community support during these challenging times.
