Andhra Pradesh Races to Protect Farmers as Cyclone Looms

As Cyclone Ditwah sets its sights on Andhra Pradesh, the state's government is in a race against time to shield its farmers from yet another devastating blow. With over 9.6 lakh metric tonnes of paddy already procured, the authorities are pulling out all stops to ensure the safety of both farmers and their hard-earned harvests.

The recent cyclone Montha, which wreaked havoc in October, has left farmers, especially dairy farmers, reeling. Just as they were gearing up to sell their Kharif produce, the looming threat of Cyclone Ditwah has cast a shadow of uncertainty. The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) warning that Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam, and Kurnool districts are in the cyclone's direct path has only amplified the sense of urgency.

Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar has vowed to protect farmers' interests, stating, "Our effort is to ensure that not a single farmer suffers because of Cyclone Ditwah." Procurement centres are operating around the clock, providing a lifeline to farmers. In a swift move to offer financial security, the government is directly depositing payments into farmers' accounts within six hours of procurement in cyclone-prone areas.

Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu is leading the charge to safeguard the harvested paddy from rain damage. The distribution of tarpaulins and protective sheets at the mandal and district levels is underway, along with the deployment of additional harvesters to expedite the collection of standing crops in vulnerable districts. This rapid response provides a glimmer of hope to anxious farming communities, who have already endured their fair share of challenges.

With Cyclone Ditwah's approach, the government's proactive measures are not just about protecting crops; they symbolize a commitment to the resilience and welfare of Andhra Pradesh's agricultural backbone.
