India’s Comprehensive Approach to Enhancing Population Health

India is significantly advancing its healthcare landscape through a series of policies and programs aimed at improving public health and accessibility. With a population of over 1.4 billion, the country faces a dual burden of communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), exacerbated by socio-economic disparities and infrastructure challenges.

Recent government initiatives reflect a robust commitment to addressing these health issues. The National Family Health Survey-5 highlights persistent challenges such as high infant mortality rates and widespread malnutrition. To combat these issues, the government has launched several key programs. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Stroke aims to reduce NCDs by 25% by 2025, while the Swachh Bharat Mission focuses on improving sanitation to prevent disease.

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, introduced in 2018, is a notable initiative providing health insurance and primary care to vulnerable populations, and the POSHAN Abhiyaan targets malnutrition through a multi-sectoral approach. Additionally, the National Health Mission integrates rural and urban health efforts to improve access and quality of care.

India’s total healthcare expenditure has risen, reflecting increased government investment in health services and infrastructure. Despite progress, challenges remain, including uneven resource allocation and the need for enhanced healthcare access. Continued political commitment and collaboration across sectors are essential to achieving universal health coverage and addressing health disparities.
