In a proactive move to empower citizens against cybercrime, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) and The Times of India (TOI) joined forces to host an eye-opening awareness event in Hyderabad's Nanakramguda area. The session, part of TOI's 'Don't Get Scammed' campaign, attracted residents of all ages from Golf View Apartments, eager to learn how to protect their hard-earned savings in the digital age.
The event shed light on the startling reality of cyber fraud, with Deputy Superintendent Hari Krishna revealing that in 2025 alone, the TGCSB has recovered 212 crore out of the staggering 1,235 crore lost to online scams. Emphasizing the power of prompt reporting, Krishna noted that quick action significantly increases the chances of recovery. Since its inception in 2023, the bureau has been actively educating the public, conducting approximately 50,000 awareness sessions across Telangana.
Residents were educated about various cyber threats, including digital arrest scams, investment frauds, and job scams. Deputy Superintendent KVM Prasad explained the psychological tactics employed by fraudsters, who often lure victims with initial small returns, gradually encouraging larger investments. Victims are then trapped in a cycle of false account balances and blocked withdrawals, leading to significant financial losses.
The event's interactive nature, including puzzles and competitions, ensured residents, especially the younger generation, actively participated and learned valuable lessons. A resident, A Narsimhan, praised the initiative, stating, "This kind of awareness at the community level is invaluable. We now understand the urgency of reporting and recognizing red flags." The session concluded with a sense of empowerment, as residents felt better equipped to navigate the digital world safely.
