A routine visit to a neighbourhood clinic in Hyderabad has turned into a fight for life for 36-year-old dentist Mariyam Syed Hafiz, who slipped into a coma on November 22. This tragic incident has sparked a police investigation into allegations of medical negligence, leaving the city's medical community and residents on edge.
The Film Nagar police registered a case against the attending physician after Mariyam's brother, Syed Inzamaam Syed Hafiz, filed a complaint detailing the harrowing experience. According to the complaint, Mariyam suffered a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotic Monocef, despite her brother explicitly informing the doctor about her documented penicillin allergy. The reaction led to a rapid deterioration of her condition, with skin redness, itching, and bluish lips, followed by anaphylactic shock and cardiac arrest.
What has further alarmed the family and authorities is the alleged response of the clinic staff. Instead of calling an ambulance, they placed Mariyam in an autorickshaw and sent her to a hospital in Gachibowli, where she arrived unresponsive. Doctors at the hospital diagnosed hypoxic brain injury due to prolonged oxygen deprivation, and Mariyam remains on a ventilator in critical condition.
The police have initiated an investigation, gathering statements from the complainant and his mother and requesting medical records from the hospital. The attending doctor will also be questioned soon. This case highlights the critical importance of medical professionals adhering to patient safety protocols and the potential consequences of negligence. As the investigation unfolds, the public awaits answers and justice for Mariyam and her family.
