In a shocking incident, a young man from Hyderabad fell victim to a cunning online scam, losing a staggering Rs 1,02,093. This elaborate con, known as a 'honey trap', lured the unsuspecting individual with promises of intimate encounters, only to exploit his vulnerability and financial trust.
The victim, a 20-year-old resident of Yakutpura, Hyderabad, was deceived by a fraudster on the messaging platform Telegram. Posing as a female offering sexual services, the scammer used fake photos and fabricated feedback to gain the victim's trust. The fraudster's modus operandi involved multiple payment requests, each disguised as essential charges for advance booking, service security, and room reservations. The young man, unaware of the trap, made the payments through UPI and bank transfers, believing them to be mandatory and refundable.
The scam reached its climax when the victim, instructed to reach a hotel in Abids, found no one there. Instead, the fraudster demanded an additional Rs 10,000 under threats. It was at this point that the victim realized he had been ensnared in a sophisticated cyber fraud and extortion scheme.
"We urge citizens to be cautious of unsolicited messages offering companionship or sexual services," Hyderabad Police warned in a press release. They advised the public never to share personal details or make payments based on such promises. The police also provided emergency contact details for reporting cyber fraud: 1930, www.cybercrime.gov.in, or 8712665171 via call or WhatsApp. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the digital realm, where even the most private interactions can become opportunities for exploitation.
