In a city-wide crackdown on drunk driving, Hyderabad's traffic police have made a significant impact with a special weekend drive, apprehending nearly 1,000 drivers under the influence of alcohol. This operation, conducted over two days in late November, highlights the city's commitment to road safety and sends a clear message to potential offenders.
The Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionerate's joint effort resulted in 983 drunk driving cases. The Hyderabad traffic police, with their focused campaign on November 28 and 29, accounted for 552 of these cases, while their counterparts in Cyberabad caught 431 offenders. The majority of those caught were two-wheeler riders, with 438 cases, followed by three-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers.
The offenders' Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels varied significantly, with the police categorizing and registering cases accordingly. The data reveals a concerning trend, with 19 individuals having BAC levels between 201 and 250 mg/100 ml, and an alarming 18 drivers with levels exceeding 300 mg/100 ml. These high BAC levels indicate a severe risk to public safety, as impaired driving can lead to fatal accidents.
"There will be zero tolerance for drunk driving violations," a police spokesperson stated, emphasizing the ongoing nature of this campaign. This initiative is a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the potential legal consequences. With such a large number of apprehensions in just one weekend, it is evident that Hyderabad's traffic police are taking a proactive approach to road safety, aiming to deter potential offenders and protect the public from the hazards of drunk driving.
