Trafficked Engineer's Harrowing Journey: From Hyderabad to Myanmar's Cyber Scam Hub

In a shocking revelation, a young civil engineer from Hyderabad has come forward with a chilling account of being trafficked to Myanmar and coerced into a cyber-fraud operation. The victim, aged 29, has filed a complaint against three individuals involved in a fake overseas job racket, shedding light on the dark underbelly of the online job market.

The engineer's ordeal began in December 2024 when he approached Abroad Gateways in Kukatpally, seeking international employment opportunities. He paid a substantial sum of Rs 2.5 lakh for a construction job abroad, only to be offered a food delivery position in Serbia, which he declined. Undeterred, the fraudsters presented him with another opportunity, a data-entry job in Bangkok with a lucrative salary of 80,000 INR. Little did he know that this offer would lead him into a web of deceit and exploitation.

The victim was introduced to Arnold, a handler, on Telegram, who arranged an interview and assured him of his selection. However, instead of Bangkok, he was transported to Myanmar, a journey that involved multiple vehicles and a boat ride. Upon arrival at KK5 Park, he was forced to sign a one-year contract, with the threat of a $4,000 penalty or the recruitment of two additional victims for his release. He was then coerced into creating fake profiles on dating apps like Ashley Madison and social media platforms to target US citizens, extracting their personal information for investment scams.

After months of captivity, the victim, along with nearly 2,000 others, seized an opportunity to escape during the potential demolition of KK5 Park. They walked 20 km to the Myanmar border, only to be detained by the Myanmar army. Eventually, the Indian embassy intervened, and the victim returned home in November, along with 12 other trafficked Indians. The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau has registered a case, and an investigation into this trafficking and cyber-crime syndicate is underway.
