Nigeria’s $235m cocaine seizure sparks probe

In early November 2025, the discovery of a 1,000 kg cocaine shipment at Lagos’ Tincan Port triggered a major investigation involving not only national but global law enforcement. The seizure — valued at about $235 million by Nigerian authorities — is among the largest drug hauls ever recorded in the country.

According to the report, terminal operators at the PTML terminal raised the alarm after noticing irregularities during container screening. The container, declared “empty,” was destined for export, which is a common smuggling disguise used by traffickers. Once NDLEA officers verified the contents as cocaine, the shipment was formally seized and handed over.

Recognizing the transnational character of the trafficking ring, NDLEA invited the US-DEA and UK-NCA to join the probe. Officials emphasized that the operation is not only about seizing drugs but dismantling entire cartels, from financiers and logistics operators to brokers outside Nigeria.

The seizure and ensuing global investigation serve as a turning point for regional maritime security, prompting tighter container inspections at Nigerian ports and renewed scrutiny of shipping lines and trade routes often exploited for illicit trafficking.
