Telangana's Cybercrime Fight: Rs 350 Crore Refunded to Online Fraud Victims

In a significant victory for online security, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has successfully facilitated the refund of a staggering Rs 350 crore to citizens who fell prey to online fraudsters. This substantial recovery is a testament to the state's proactive approach to cybercrime management, which has set a benchmark for the entire nation.

Since its inception, the TGCSB has been at the forefront of this battle, processing a massive 2.44 lakh complaints and registering over 58,000 FIRs across Telangana. The bureau's director, Shikha Goel, highlighted the state's impressive performance, noting an 8% decline in cybercrime cases compared to a 29% national increase. This achievement is even more remarkable when considering the 30% reduction in financial losses in Telangana, outpacing the 6% national decrease.

The success can be attributed to a series of strategic reforms. The upgrade of the 1930 cybercrime helpline and the strengthening of the 'Put on Hold' banking mechanism have played pivotal roles in ensuring swift action against suspicious activities. Additionally, the development of a model refund framework, in collaboration with the High Court, has streamlined the process of returning funds to victims.

To further enhance public awareness, TGCSB launched the 'Fraud Ka Full Stop' campaign, a six-week initiative focusing on various cyber threats. Director General of Police (DGP) B Shivadhar Reddy emphasized the importance of treating cybercrime as a core policing priority, urging district officials to actively participate in awareness programs. The campaign aims to educate citizens about prevalent cyber threats, including digital arrest scams, investment frauds, and online safety for vulnerable groups, thereby empowering them to navigate the digital world securely.
