In a shocking case of digital deception, a 60-year-old businessman from Mokila, Rangareddy district, fell victim to a cybercrime syndicate, losing a staggering Rs 1.83 crore. This incident marks a new level of sophistication in online fraud, where scammers impersonated officials from the National Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), a trusted authority in the digital realm.
The scam unfolded over four days, starting with a phone call on November 27. The fraudsters, posing as I4C officers, accused the businessman of harassing a woman from Bengaluru, a claim he vehemently denied. The scammers then introduced a new character, 'Tirumala Ramarao', who further intimidated the victim. Despite his protests, they obtained his Aadhaar details, setting the stage for a more elaborate con.
The criminals escalated their threats, introducing fake police and CBI officers into the narrative. They claimed the case had international implications, involving a woman trafficking ring, and demanded the businessman's cooperation. Through video calls, they collected his and his wife's bank account information and then threatened them with 90-day judicial custody, placing them under a so-called 'digital arrest'.
Over three days, the victim transferred Rs 1.82 crore to the scammers' accounts, believing it was for official verification. However, the fraudsters' greed exposed their scheme. When they demanded details of his assets and land, the businessman sought advice, leading to the realization that he had been scammed. The Cyberabad Cyber Crime Police are now investigating, tracking the money trail, and working to apprehend the perpetrators.
This case highlights the evolving tactics of cybercriminals and the need for heightened vigilance, especially when dealing with authorities online or over the phone. As the investigation unfolds, it will be crucial to raise awareness and educate the public about such sophisticated scams to prevent similar incidents in the future.
