Hyderabad Senior Loses Savings to Facebook Scam

In a cautionary tale for online shoppers, a Hyderabad senior citizen was scammed out of a significant sum, highlighting the growing sophistication of cyber fraudsters. The 75-year-old, a resident of Habsiguda, fell victim to a well-crafted trap, losing Rs 1.09 lakh in a matter of minutes.

The incident began with a seemingly innocuous Facebook advertisement. The ad, masquerading as a promotional offer from D-Mart, promised grocery items for a mere Rs 298. This enticing deal caught the senior's attention, leading him to click on the link and provide his personal details, a decision that would soon prove costly.

Unbeknownst to the victim, the fraudsters had set a trap. After he entered his information, they promptly called, confirming the order and requesting further action. The caller instructed the man to install an APK file, a malicious tool that granted them remote access to his mobile device. With this access, the scammers were able to drain Rs 1.09 lakh from his SBI credit card account before the victim's son could intervene and block the cards.

The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a case and are currently investigating. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the digital realm. It underscores the importance of public awareness and vigilance, especially among vulnerable populations, in recognizing and avoiding such scams. As the investigation unfolds, it will be crucial to trace the perpetrators and bring them to justice, sending a clear message to those who exploit the trust of online shoppers.
