In a shocking revelation, a Hyderabad-based industrial firm, M/s SSN Enterprises, has fallen victim to a sophisticated cybercrime, resulting in a staggering financial loss of over Rs 17 lakh. The company's long-trusted email system, an essential tool for business communication, has been exploited by unknown cybercriminals, leaving the firm and its clients reeling.

The firm, located in the SV Co-operative Industrial Estate, Balanagar, has been using the email ID ssne@rediffmail.com for over two decades. However, this familiarity became a vulnerability when cybercriminals gained unauthorized access. The perpetrators sent fraudulent emails to one of the company's major clients, requesting a change in the bank account details for payments. The client, unaware of the deception, complied and transferred a significant sum of Rs 17,20,745 across eight transactions over 40 days.

The fraudsters' methods were cunning. They provided cancelled cheques from Canara Bank and IDBI Bank, diverting payments from the original State Bank of India account. The client, trusting the long-established communication channel, did not suspect foul play until it was too late. The investigation revealed that the scammers had manipulated emails from both ends, hiding their tracks by diverting, deleting, or shifting client emails to obscure folders. The spoofed emails even originated from a slightly altered domain, @tejavehicle.com, a subtle deviation from the client's actual domain, @tejavehicles.com.

The Cyber Crime Police Station in Cyberabad has registered a case and is investigating this sophisticated scam. M/s SSN Enterprises has taken swift action by filing an online complaint and keeping the compromised email active to aid the investigation. They have also alerted all clients to ensure no further damage. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving cyber threats businesses face and the importance of vigilance in digital communication.
