Telangana's Cyber Fraud Decline: Awareness vs. Intimidation Tactics

In the digital age, where cybercrime knows no bounds, Telangana residents have witnessed a significant decline in falling prey to digital arrest scams. The statistics speak for themselves: a 63% drop in reported cases, translating to a reduction in financial losses from Rs 176 crore in 2024 to Rs 76 crore in 2025. This success story, however, is not without its shadows, as cyber fraudsters continue to exploit the unaware.

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has revealed that the intimidation tactics used by scammers are still effective, with at least five victims in 2025 losing over Rs 1.5 crore each. The scammers' modus operandi involves impersonating police officers and threatening victims with digital arrest, as highlighted by a recent case where a victim transferred Rs 3.3 crore under duress. Shikha Goel, the TGCSB director, emphasizes the importance of public awareness, stating, "There is nothing called digital arrest. The moment you receive such a call, hang up. Fraudsters exploit ignorance."

The battle against cybercrime is far from over, with sextortion also posing a significant threat. In the past three years, 7,337 victims in Telangana have lost Rs 14.6 crore due to this insidious scam. Scammers use morphed explicit videos to blackmail victims, as illustrated by a case where a man lost Rs 1.2 crore after being tricked into an explicit video chat. The police's advice is clear: "Do not accept unknown video calls."

As the state's awareness drive, 'Fraud Ka Full Stop,' continues, the focus on educating citizens about these cyber threats is crucial. The initiative aims to empower residents with knowledge, ensuring that Telangana's digital landscape becomes a safer space, one informed citizen at a time.
