In a significant move to address rising concerns, Hyderabad's police commissioner, VC Sajjanar, has issued a stern warning to sections of the transgender community involved in extortion activities. This development comes in response to a surge in complaints from residents, who have been facing harassment and forced monetary demands during auspicious occasions.
The warning was delivered at a meeting attended by approximately 250 transgender individuals, organized by the Hyderabad police in collaboration with the Crime Investigation Department and the Hyderabad collectorate. Sajjanar emphasized that the police would take strict legal action against those engaging in such unlawful practices. He highlighted the unacceptable nature of these incidents, where groups of transgender persons allegedly demand large sums of money from households, often accompanied by intimidation tactics.
The commissioner also addressed the internal conflicts within the community, attributing them to attempts at area domination, which have led to law and order challenges. A recent incident involving the death of a transgender person during one such dispute was cited as a grave concern. Sajjanar assured that the police would take a two-pronged approach, dealing firmly with violators while supporting those striving to live peacefully and respectfully.
Additional Director General of Police, CID, Charu Sinha, encouraged the transgender community to utilize 'Pride Place', a platform established under the women safety wing to address their grievances and facilitate their dignified integration into society. The meeting also discussed employment opportunities for transgender individuals in corporate sectors, with Hyderabad district additional director (transgender welfare) Rajender leading these efforts. Telangana, home to approximately 50,000 transgender persons, is taking steps to ensure their welfare and inclusion, including advising community members to obtain central government-issued identity cards to access reservations and welfare schemes.
