In a significant move to address public concerns, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has taken a firm stance against forced collections and harassment by transgenders in the city. During a special meeting with 250 transgenders, the Commissioner issued a stern warning, emphasizing that illegal activities will not be tolerated and that strict legal action will be taken against offenders.
The meeting, held at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) auditorium, aimed to address the rising complaints from citizens regarding transgender individuals barging into homes and demanding money during auspicious events. Commissioner Sajjanar's message was clear: "It is not right to harass residents, and we will not tolerate such forced collections." He further stressed that anyone, regardless of their identity, who takes the law into their own hands will face imprisonment and legal consequences.
The event also shed light on the challenges within the transgender community, with CP Sajjanar acknowledging the group rivalries and dominance struggles that often lead to security issues and, tragically, loss of life. Despite these concerns, the Police Commissioner assured the community of their support. He announced the government's priority on transgender welfare, promising a comprehensive policy for their benefit.
To address these issues, Additional DGP Charu Sinha introduced the 'Pride Place' system within the Women Safety Department, dedicated to resolving transgender problems. This initiative aims to provide a safe space for the community to seek help without fear. The meeting concluded with a call for the transgender community to embrace legal means of livelihood and take advantage of government welfare schemes, fostering a harmonious and respectful coexistence with society.
