Hyderabad Cybercrime Police: Quick Action Saves Victims from Fraud

In a remarkable display of swift action, Hyderabad's cybercrime police have successfully recovered and refunded significant sums of money to two victims of online fraud, emphasizing the critical importance of reporting such crimes within the 'golden hour'. This recent development highlights the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the crucial role of timely reporting in combating online financial crimes.

On December 5, a young software engineer from Yousufguda fell prey to a fake WhatsApp message, which led to the installation of a malicious APK file, 'M-Parivahan'. This file was designed to steal One Time Passwords (OTPs), allowing fraudsters to access and conduct transactions worth Rs 5,23,125. The victim's quick thinking and immediate call to the cybercrime helpline 1930 proved pivotal. By filing a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the police were able to act swiftly, sending notices to the involved financial institutions, ICICI Bank, and Amazon Pay, to halt and reverse the transactions. As a result, the entire amount was recovered and returned to the victim.

Just days later, on December 10, a similar incident occurred when a resident of Amberpet received a fraudulent APK file, this time disguised as an RBL Bank credit card update. The malware resulted in a loss of Rs 1,25,822. However, the cybercrime police's prompt intervention led to the cancellation of pending fraudulent transactions on Flipkart and Mobikwik, a digital wallet platform. The victim was refunded Rs 1 lakh.

"The golden hour is a critical period in cybercrime reporting," said a spokesperson for the Hyderabad cybercrime division. "We urge citizens to act swiftly and report any suspicious activities immediately. By doing so, we can work together to minimize financial losses and bring these criminals to justice." This recent success in Hyderabad serves as a testament to the effectiveness of timely reporting and the dedication of cybercrime authorities in protecting citizens from the evolving threats of online fraud.
