Hyderabad's Cybercrime Police: Quick Action Recovers Rs 6.23 Lakh in Digital Fraud

In a swift display of cybercrime prevention and response, the Hyderabad City Cybercrime Police have successfully recovered a substantial sum of Rs 6.23 lakh in two separate incidents of digital fraud. This achievement underscores the critical importance of timely reporting, a concept known as the 'Golden Hour' in law enforcement.

The first case involved a young software engineer who unwittingly downloaded a counterfeit M-Parivahan APK, a sophisticated scam that resulted in unauthorized transactions totaling Rs 5.23 lakh on his ICICI Bank credit card. The victim's prompt action, calling the Cyber Helpline and filing a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), set the wheels in motion for a rapid response. The Cybercrime Police, in collaboration with ICICI Bank and Amazon Pay, managed to secure a full refund for the victim.

In another incident, a resident of Amberpet, aged 53, was targeted with a fake RBL Bank APK. This malicious app accessed his personal information, leading to a financial loss of Rs 1.25 lakh. Again, the Cybercrime Police's swift intervention, following the victim's NCRP complaint, prevented further damage. They blocked ongoing transactions and coordinated with Flipkart and Mobikwik to cancel fraudulent gift card orders, resulting in a substantial refund of Rs 1 lakh.

Investigators warn that these malicious APKs can compromise users' data, enabling unauthorized transactions and spreading malware. They often impersonate legitimate services, tricking unsuspecting individuals into downloading them. The Cybercrime Police emphasize the need for public awareness, urging citizens to download apps only from official stores and to report any suspicious activity within the Golden Hour for the best chance of recovery. As digital fraud evolves, the Hyderabad City Cybercrime Police's recent success stories serve as a testament to the power of quick action and public vigilance.
