Mahesh Babu’s NGO Mahesh Babu Foundation gets FCRA nod

New Delhi — In a significant development for celebrity-led philanthropy, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted registration to the Mahesh Babu Foundation under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), 2010, allowing the organisation to legally receive and utilise foreign donations for its social welfare activities.

The approval places the foundation among hundreds of organisations recently cleared under the MHA’s FCRA regime, which regulates foreign funding for Indian non-profits. Officials said that the latest batch of registrations includes 389 organisations that have met compliance requirements.

Founded by Telugu film star Mahesh Babu, the Mahesh Babu Foundation focuses on supporting underprivileged families, particularly in areas of healthcare and education. Among its key initiatives is providing financial assistance to families of newborns with congenital heart ailments, helping them afford treatment and hospitalization. The foundation has also worked to support education for poor children and adopt and develop villages into more sustainable and advanced communities.

The actor’s personal experiences have shaped the foundation’s mission. Reports note that Mahesh Babu was motivated to help families facing high medical costs after his son, Gautam, was born prematurely and required extended care in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Since its inception, the foundation has reportedly funded more than 2,000 heart surgeries through collaborations with hospitals such as Andhra Hospitals and Rainbow Hospitals, highlighting its impact on child healthcare across regions.

With the FCRA approval, the Mahesh Babu Foundation can now broaden its funding base by accepting foreign contributions, potentially expanding ongoing programmes and launching new initiatives that align with its mission of healthcare and educational support.

Queries sent to the Mahesh Babu Foundation for comment on the FCRA registration outcome were not immediately answered at the time of reporting.
