Hyderabad Cracks Down on Drunk Driving

The Hyderabad Traffic Police have launched an extensive campaign against drunk driving, resulting in a significant number of arrests and penalties. In a two-day operation, the police apprehended 867 drivers under the influence of alcohol, sending a strong message about road safety.

The crackdown, which took place across the city and the Cyberabad Commissionerate, revealed a concerning trend among various age groups and vehicle types. On December 12 and 13, the Hyderabad police alone caught 460 drunk drivers, with two-wheelers accounting for the majority of offenders. The Cyberabad police also contributed to the effort, nabbing 407 individuals, including a notable number of young adults between 21 and 30 years old.

The authorities' swift action led to 16 individuals being sentenced to imprisonment, while many others faced fines and social service penalties. The police emphasized the severity of drunk driving, stating that causing accidents while intoxicated could lead to charges of culpable homicide, carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail.

This operation serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drunk driving in Hyderabad. With a focus on public safety, the police aim to deter potential offenders and reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents. The recent drive highlights the commitment of law enforcement to protect citizens and enforce stricter road safety measures. As the courts continue to process these cases, the city anticipates a more comprehensive resolution to this persistent issue.
