Hyderabad Cracks Down on Drunk Driving: 867 Arrested

Hyderabad's streets witnessed a dramatic crackdown on drunk driving as the city's traffic police launched an extensive operation, resulting in a staggering 867 arrests. This large-scale drive, spanning the Hyderabad and Cyberabad Commissionerate areas, aimed to curb the dangerous practice of driving under the influence.

During the operation, which took place over the weekend and into the early hours of the following week, officers conducted breathalyzer tests and closely monitored traffic patterns. The Hyderabad police apprehended 460 drivers between December 12 and 13, with the majority being two-wheeler riders. The Cyberabad police, not to be outdone, arrested 407 individuals, with the highest number of offenders in the 21-30 age bracket.

The severity of the situation was underscored by the high Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels detected. In Hyderabad, 30 drivers had BAC levels ranging from 200 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml and above, while in Cyberabad, 53 offenders had BAC levels as high as 500 mg/100 ml. These alarming readings highlight the potential risks posed to public safety.

The crackdown sends a clear message to the public: driving under the influence will not be tolerated. The police have emphasized the potential legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines, as well as the possibility of charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing fatalities while drunk driving. With the courts swiftly disposing of 385 drunk driving cases in the past week, the authorities' commitment to addressing this issue is evident. This comprehensive operation serves as a stern warning to potential offenders and a step towards ensuring safer roads for all.
