Hyderabad Traffic Cops Busted for Bribery Scheme

Hyderabad's streets are no stranger to corruption, but a recent expose has revealed a shocking level of bribery and graft within the city's traffic police force. In a bold move, the Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, V. C. Sajjanar, has ordered four traffic personnel, including a Station House Officer (SHO), a Sub-Inspector (SI), a court constable, and a home guard, to report to police headquarters following allegations of a sophisticated bribery operation.

The scandal came to light after a video emerged, capturing a traffic officer at the VIP Zone in Jubilee Hills instructing violators to leave money at designated spots instead of handing it over directly. This covert tactic was just one of many used by the accused officers to collect bribes from traffic violators and drunk drivers while evading detection. The officers' methods were not limited to this one location; they had allegedly set up a collection hub near Kattalmandi, where they demanded substantial bribes from drunk drivers, often in the form of cash and biryani packets, based on their blood alcohol content (BAC) levels.

The officers' scheme was intricate. Instead of printing receipts from handheld breath analysers, which would automatically transmit data to senior officers, they displayed the BAC reading on the device and then collected bribes, allowing offenders to escape prosecution. This well-organized corruption ring was exposed when a video surfaced, showing a home guard, Keshavulu, accepting a bribe. When confronted, he confessed, leading to the Commissioner's swift action.

The repercussions are already being felt, with at least 10 police personnel suspended and an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) ordered to report to headquarters. This incident underscores the ongoing battle against corruption in Hyderabad's police force and the need for continued vigilance to ensure the integrity of the city's law enforcement agencies.
