In a disturbing trend, cybercriminals are exploiting the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) UDGAM portal, duping innocent citizens out of their hard-earned money. The Hyderabad Police have raised the alarm, warning the public about this sophisticated scam that preys on people's trust in the RBI.
The fraudsters' modus operandi involves sending messages and emails with a tempting lure: the promise of unclaimed deposits in old bank accounts. These messages, often reading like "You have lakhs of rupees waiting to be claimed," prompt victims to click on a malicious link. Once clicked, the scam unfolds rapidly, with hackers potentially gaining access to mobile phones and emptying bank accounts within minutes.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar emphasized that the RBI never solicits personal banking details or contacts individuals directly regarding unclaimed deposits. He urged citizens to exercise caution and follow a set of guidelines to protect themselves. These include accessing only the official UDGAM website, udgam.rbi.org.in, and avoiding suspicious links received through messaging platforms or email. The public is also reminded never to share OTPs, passwords, or banking details with anyone claiming to be an official.
As the threat of cybercrime looms large, the police are urging citizens to stay vigilant and spread awareness. In the event of a cyber fraud, victims are advised to act swiftly by calling the national cybercrime helpline or filing a complaint on the official cybercrime website to minimize potential financial losses. This scam highlights the evolving tactics of cybercriminals and the ongoing challenge of safeguarding personal finances in the digital age.
