In a swift and coordinated effort, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has once again demonstrated its prowess in combating cybercrime, saving a retired teacher from a devious digital arrest scam. The incident, which took place in Nalgonda district, highlights the growing sophistication of online fraudsters and the crucial role of vigilant bank staff and law enforcement agencies in protecting citizens.
The victim, P Devender Reddy, had fallen prey to a cunning scheme where cybercriminals impersonated Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials. They coerced the elderly teacher, claiming his Aadhaar number was linked to a criminal case involving explicit content on social media. Under the guise of a digital arrest, they demanded a hefty sum of 18 lakh to close the case. The psychological pressure and threats left Reddy with little choice but to comply.
However, the alertness of State Bank of India staff at the Prakasham Bazar branch in Nalgonda proved pivotal. Their keen observation of Reddy's anxious demeanor prompted them to notify the Deputy Superintendent of Police at the District Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (D4C). The swift response from the cybercrime team halted the transaction and initiated an inquiry, ultimately exposing the scam.
"We urge citizens, especially senior citizens and those recently retired, to be cautious of such fraudulent schemes," said a spokesperson for the Cyber Crime Police. "No legitimate authority conducts digital arrests or solicits money over the phone. We encourage everyone to report such incidents immediately to the national cyber crime helpline or the dedicated cybercrime portal." This incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving cyber threats targeting vulnerable individuals and the need for collective vigilance to safeguard personal finances.
