In a shocking incident, a Hyderabad resident fell victim to a cunning sextortion scam, losing a staggering Rs 3.41 lakh. This sophisticated fraud, involving a woman's seductive call followed by a threatening video call from an imposter police officer, highlights the evolving tactics of cybercriminals.
The victim, a resident of Gowliguda, received a call on October 5th from a woman named Jyothi Gupta, who attempted to lure him into a compromising situation. Shortly after, a man claiming to be Vikram Goswami, wearing a uniform, made a video call and threatened to release a damaging video of the victim. This quick escalation from seduction to blackmail is a new and alarming trend in cybercrime.
Fearing social repercussions, the victim made multiple payments to a person named Manjeet Singh, hoping to resolve the issue. However, the fraudsters' deception continued as they hacked his bank accounts and demanded more money, even claiming the woman had died to further extort funds. This case illustrates the emotional manipulation and fear tactics employed by cybercriminals.
The Cyber Crime police have urged citizens to exercise caution and not to engage with unknown video calls, especially those with explicit content. "Fraudsters record these calls to blackmail victims," warned the Cyber Crime DCP. Authorities emphasize that law enforcement does not demand money over the phone or video calls to settle cases. The public is advised to never share personal financial information or transfer money under pressure. With cyber fraud on the rise, awareness and vigilance are crucial to protecting oneself from such sophisticated scams.
