Hyderabad's Baby Trafficking Bust: 11 Arrested, Newborns Rescued

In a shocking revelation, Hyderabad's Miyapur police, aided by the Special Operations Team (SOT) from Shamshabad, have cracked down on an interstate human trafficking syndicate, arresting 11 individuals and rescuing two newborns. This operation sheds light on the dark underbelly of a trade that preys on the vulnerable and exploits the desperation of childless couples.

The accused, with a well-organized structure, were caught red-handed while attempting to sell the infants. The mastermind, Gangadhar Reddy, has a long history of criminal activities, with 18 cases registered against him across various cities, including offences under the Juvenile Justice Act, the BNS, and the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021. His accomplice, Babu Reddy, an IVF agent, had also been previously arrested for similar offences.

The syndicate's modus operandi involved procuring newborns from economically disadvantaged families across states, using middlemen, and then selling them to childless couples for substantial amounts. This particular case involved infants from Ahmedabad and Ramanpet, Siddipet district, who were brought to Hyderabad for illegal transactions.

This incident is just the tip of the iceberg, as evidenced by the seven major cases of baby trafficking reported in the state this year. With a growing trend of such heinous crimes, the authorities are faced with the challenge of not only rescuing the victims but also addressing the root causes and dismantling these criminal networks. The public, too, must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, playing a crucial role in preventing such crimes.
