Hyderabad's Commissioner of Police, VC Sajjanar, has issued a stern warning to New Year's Eve revellers, promising zero tolerance for drunk driving. With the city gearing up for a festive season, including Christmas, Vaikunta Ekadashi, and New Year celebrations, the police are taking proactive measures to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.
In a press statement, Commissioner Sajjanar announced that special enforcement drives against drunk driving will be conducted across Hyderabad from Wednesday until New Year's Day. The night of December 31 will see an extensive operation with drunk driving checks at 100 locations, supported by seven additional platoons of police forces. The message is clear: driving under the influence will not be tolerated, and offenders face severe consequences.
The penalties for drunk driving are substantial, including vehicle seizure, a hefty Rs 10,000 fine, and potential imprisonment of up to six months. The Commissioner also indicated that driving licenses of those convicted could be permanently cancelled. To avoid such harsh penalties, partygoers are advised to plan ahead, either by arranging a designated driver or utilizing cab services.
The police have also imposed a 1 a.m. curfew for New Year's Eve events at pubs and hotels rated three-star and above. Noise pollution regulations will be strictly enforced, and sound systems violating permissible decibel levels will be confiscated. Moreover, establishments will be held accountable for any illegal activities, including the use of narcotics or obscene performances, which could result in license cancellations and criminal charges.
