Cyberabad's Hostels Under Scrutiny: A Safety and Security Overhaul

In a significant move to combat illegal activities and enhance safety, the Cyberabad Police have embarked on a comprehensive audit of hostels across their jurisdiction, with a particular focus on security and regulatory compliance. This decision comes on the heels of a recent drug bust at a co-living hostel in Raidurg, where a narcotics supply network was uncovered, leading to multiple arrests.

The operation, conducted by the Special Operations Team (SOT), resulted in the seizure of various illicit substances, including MDMA and OG Kush (cannabis), along with mobile phones. This incident has prompted a broader examination of safety protocols and oversight in the region's co-living spaces. Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty emphasized the need for stricter measures, stating that the intensified inspections aim to curb illegal activities and ensure the safety of residents. The police, in collaboration with the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC), have initiated 'Project Safe Stay', a dedicated safety program targeting hostel accommodations.

The audit's initial findings reveal a concerning lack of security and fire safety measures in the majority of hostels. The Madhapur and Balanagar zones, with their high concentration of hostels, are a particular area of concern. The police have already enumerated approximately 4,000 hostels, housing nearly 200,000 residents, primarily young men and women seeking employment and education. To address these issues, the police and SCSC jointly audited 1,000 hostels for essential safety features like CCTV coverage, security personnel, and fire safety systems. The results were shared with SCSC member companies to assist employees in choosing safer accommodations.

With the next phase of audits underway, the Cyberabad Police are determined to transform the region's hostels into safer, more secure environments. The initiative's success will not only ensure the well-being of residents but also set a precedent for improved safety standards in co-living spaces across the region.
