Inclusive Policing: Hyderabad's Bold Step Towards Social Integration

In a groundbreaking move, the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate in Hyderabad is set to redefine traffic policing, aiming to strike a delicate balance between law enforcement and social rehabilitation. Inspired by the Hyderabad Traffic Police's recent initiative, the Commissionerate plans to recruit members of the Hijra community as traffic assistants, marking a significant shift towards inclusive policing. This proposal comes on the heels of a directive from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who, in December 2024, ordered the recruitment of 44 transgender individuals as traffic assistants, setting a precedent for the Traffic Police Department.

Rachakonda Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu believes this initiative is a step towards a more reformative and inclusive policing philosophy. By offering structured employment, the police aim to tackle social marginalisation and steer individuals away from unlawful activities. This strategy is particularly significant in the wake of recent incidents involving certain members of the Hijra community, who were accused of attacking a homeowner in the Medchal Commissionerate area. These events prompted the police to re-evaluate their approach, leading to a policy that combines enforcement with corrective and rehabilitative measures.

The Commissioner emphasised the importance of a nuanced perspective, stating that crimes are not exclusive to any one community or gender. He stressed that while the police are committed to reform, they will also take firm action against repeat offenders, ensuring that serious crimes are dealt with strictly and impartially. This initiative, as Commissioner Babu noted, is a commitment to professional policing, promoting public safety, and fostering an environment of rehabilitation, inclusion, and harmony.
