Odisha's Railway Drug War: Uncovering a Statewide Network

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Odisha police have seized a staggering 3,352 kilograms of ganja and arrested 299 individuals in a statewide operation this year. This campaign, targeting railway routes, shines a light on the intricate web of drug smuggling that spans across multiple states.

The operation, a joint effort between the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), has resulted in the registration of 200 cases under the NDPS Act. The Cuttack and Rourkela Railway Police stations have been particularly active, with 87 and 113 cases registered, respectively. These stations have seized substantial quantities of ganja, totaling over 3,352 kilograms, and arrested 179 accused individuals. The operation also uncovered other illegal substances, including brown sugar and cough syrup.

The investigation reveals a diverse network of drug traffickers from various states, including Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, among others. This coordinated effort by the GRP and RPF involves thorough inspections of suspicious bags and the strategic deployment of sniffer dogs at major railway stations like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri.

Director General of Police Y B Khurania emphasized the zero-tolerance policy towards drug mafias, stating that strict action will be taken against all those involved. This operation is a crucial step in disrupting the drug supply chain and ensuring the safety and well-being of the public. With the ongoing investigations, Odisha police aim to dismantle the extensive smuggling networks, sending a powerful message to drug traffickers operating in the region.
