Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for an intense battle against the illicit drug trade with the formation of the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE). This specialized task force, comprising 459 dedicated personnel, aims to eradicate the cultivation, production, and distribution of ganja and other drugs across the state. With a comprehensive strategy, EAGLE is set to swoop down on drug networks, bringing a new level of coordination and expertise to the forefront of this critical mission.
The Chief Secretary of the Home Ministry, Kumar Vishwajit, has authorized the establishment of a state-level narcotics police station in Amaravati, along with 26 district-level narcotics control units. This centralized approach will enable efficient jurisdiction over the entire state, with a DSP-level officer leading the charge as the SHO. Special fast-track courts in key cities like Visakhapatnam, Rajamahendravaram, Vijayawada, Guntur, and Tirupati will ensure swift justice. The public can now access a toll-free number (1972) to report drug-related activities, with a 24-hour call center based in Amaravati.
EAGLE's organizational structure is designed for maximum impact, divided into six sections. The Legal Department will provide legal support and ensure the successful prosecution of drug-related cases. The Documentation and Training Section will educate staff and create awareness while maintaining a national database of drug offenders. The Technical Department will leverage data analysis and cyber surveillance to identify drug gangs and their financial sources. The State Task Force will be at the forefront of operations, tracking and apprehending smugglers. Administration and logistics will provide essential support, while the Central Depository will securely store seized drugs.
IG Ake Ravikrishna, the head of this department, has a challenging task ahead, but with EAGLE's comprehensive approach and dedicated personnel, Andhra Pradesh is poised to make significant strides in the fight against drug trafficking.
