Andhra Pradesh Police: Cybercrime, Narcotics, and Crime Against Women in Focus

The Andhra Pradesh Police Department is taking a proactive approach to combat various criminal activities, as revealed in a recent press conference led by Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta. The year 2025 saw a 6.17% decrease in overall crime, but the DGP highlighted specific areas of concern, including cybercrime, ganja transportation, and crimes against women and children.

In the digital realm, the police faced a significant challenge with over 62,000 cybercrime complaints and 2,332 registered cases in 2025. The DGP emphasized the complexity of digital arrest cases, where perpetrators based in China and other countries are converting stolen funds into cryptocurrency, making recovery difficult. To combat this, the DGP stressed the importance of public awareness to prevent such crimes. Despite the challenges, the police have made strides in recovering funds, freezing 98 crore in banks and refunding 3 crore to victims.

The war on narcotics also saw some success, with a decrease in cases from 1,875 in 2024 to 1,727 this year. The Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) and Inspector General of Police Ake Ravi Krishna have intensified surveillance on inter-state ganja peddling gangs. The police have arrested 9,478 accused, seized vehicles, and attached properties worth 9.11 crore in their efforts to curb drug smuggling.

In a broader context, the police department is focusing on strengthening its capabilities. DGP Gupta announced a workshop for IPS officers in January 2026, aiming to enhance structural engineering, technology, and skill development. This proactive approach to police training and public awareness indicates a comprehensive strategy to address the evolving challenges of modern-day criminal activities.
