NCB's Yearly Drug Haul: A Strategic Strike on Trafficking Networks

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has delivered a significant blow to drug trafficking operations this year, seizing a substantial 2,362 kilograms of narcotics, primarily ganja, and arresting 46 individuals connected to these illicit activities. This achievement highlights the NCB's commitment to disrupting the drug trade and its multifaceted approach to tackling this pervasive issue.

Among the notable operations was a pan-India joint venture with the Customs Intelligence Unit, leading to the confiscation of 7.618 kg of cocaine. The Chennai Zone of the NCB, in particular, played a pivotal role in this success by implementing a strategic plan to cripple the structural, organisational, and financial pillars of drug trafficking networks. This strategy involved a keen focus on financial investigations, targeting the illegally obtained assets of those arrested. As a result, in 2025, the NCB froze assets worth 12.33 crore, including both movable and immovable properties, belonging to six individuals.

A significant breakthrough came with the arrest of a Dubai-based hawala operator who facilitated drug trafficking between India and Sri Lanka. This individual, apprehended while attempting to flee the country, had illegally acquired assets worth 2 crore, which were subsequently frozen. The NCB's proactive approach also extended to legal proceedings, with 15 cases concluded, 11 of which resulted in convictions, yielding a notable 73.33% conviction rate.

The NCB's efforts have not only disrupted drug trafficking operations but also shed light on emerging trends. The agency noted a decline in the consumption of amphetamine-type stimulants, with a shift towards hydroponic weed and prescription drugs. This evolving landscape underscores the need for continued vigilance and adaptive strategies in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
