In a significant escalation of the war on drugs, Telangana's excise enforcement agencies have made remarkable strides in 2025, seizing a staggering Rs 9.40 crore worth of narcotics and registering 1,304 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This aggressive campaign, as detailed in the Annual Report 2025, has disrupted drug trafficking networks and sent a strong message to criminals.
The report, released by Excise Commissioner C Hari Kiran, highlights the multi-pronged strategy employed by the authorities. Enforcement teams targeted supply chains originating from Bengaluru, Goa, Pune, and Delhi, as well as areas frequented by foreign nationals, which were identified as major conduits for narcotics entering the state. A special focus was given to the ganja trafficking routes from Odisha's Malkangiri district, passing through Visakhapatnam, where continuous monitoring and strategic interceptions proved effective.
The year witnessed a substantial increase in arrests, with 2,333 offenders detained, and the seizure of 646 vehicles used for drug transportation. The crackdown also led to the recovery of a diverse range of narcotics, including ganja, ganja chocolates, MDMA, cocaine, heroin, LSD, and various other synthetic drugs. Notably, the enforcement teams uprooted 1,646 ganja plants, disrupting local distribution networks and deterring future cultivation.
As the state intensifies its efforts, the Excise Commissioner emphasizes the importance of continued coordination and intelligence sharing among various departments. The goal is clear: to eradicate illegal drug trafficking, protect public health, and secure state revenue by dismantling the remaining drug networks.
