Hyderabad's Crime Conundrum: A Tale of Progress and Persistence

Hyderabad, a bustling city in Telangana, witnessed a mixed bag of crime trends in 2025, with a 25% reduction in crimes against women but a persistent shadow of violence lurking within homes. This paradoxical situation raises questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the societal factors at play.

The year saw a total of 73 murders, with 18 victims being women, many of whom met their tragic end within the confines of their homes. One chilling incident in Meerpet involved a husband strangling his wife, dismembering her body, and disposing of the remains in the drains. Another case in Boduppal saw a pregnant woman strangled by her husband over dowry disputes, her body also dismembered and discarded in the Musi River. These gruesome crimes highlight the dark underbelly of domestic violence.

Despite the overall decrease in crimes against women, certain categories saw an increase. Kidnapping, molestation, and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases rose by over 600, a four percent increase. This surge may be attributed to better reporting and awareness rather than an actual rise in incidents. In Cyberabad, crimes against women accounted for nine percent of all cases, with dowry harassment and cruelty in marriage taking a prominent position.

The data reveals a disturbing pattern: most rape cases involve perpetrators known to the victims, often family members or friends. This trend complicates prevention and reporting, as victims find themselves entangled in a web of trust and fear. The persistence of these crimes, despite increased awareness campaigns and police efforts, underscores the need for a multifaceted approach.

As the city moves forward, the challenge lies in addressing the root causes of these crimes while ensuring that victims feel empowered to come forward. The police's ongoing efforts, including awareness programmes and targeted operations, are steps in the right direction, but the journey towards a safer Hyderabad is far from over.
