Hyderabad's streets witnessed a dramatic turn as the city's traffic police launched a massive operation, targeting drunk drivers during the festive season. In a two-day drive, a staggering 327 motorists were booked for driving under the influence, sending a clear message that road safety is non-negotiable.

The operation, conducted on January 2 and 3, 2026, focused on strategic locations, including major intersections and arterial roads, where the risk of accidents is typically higher. The traffic police's enforcement wing was out in full force, determined to curb the dangerous combination of alcohol and driving. Among the offenders, two-wheeler riders dominated the statistics, accounting for 263 cases, followed by four-wheeler drivers and three-wheeler operators, with 39 and 25 cases, respectively.

Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) tests painted a concerning picture. Over 130 drivers had BAC levels between 51 and 100 mg per 100 ml, while a further 66 individuals fell within the 30-50 mg range. Shockingly, six motorists exhibited BAC levels surpassing 300 mg, a severe violation of legal limits. This data underscores the potential dangers posed by drunk driving, especially during festive periods when celebrations can lead to tragic consequences on the roads.

D. Joel Davis, Joint Commissioner of Traffic, emphasized the zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving, stating, "These special drives are a necessary measure to ensure road safety. We will continue our efforts to deter such offences and prevent fatal accidents." The police's stern warning includes the filing of charge sheets and the imposition of heavy fines, driving license suspensions, or legal prosecution under the Motor Vehicles Act. As the city moves forward from the festive season, the crackdown serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the potential legal repercussions of reckless behavior.
