In a dramatic late-night intervention, a vigilant citizen and the swift response of Hyderabad's Miyapur police combined to thwart a cunning ATM robbery attempt in the city's Hafeezpet area. This incident, which occurred on Sunday, highlights the growing sophistication of ATM-related crimes and the importance of public awareness and rapid law enforcement action.
The suspect, identified as V Katamayya, a 24-year-old from Andhra Pradesh, was apprehended at an ATM in Marthanda Nagar. His modus operandi was a clever manipulation of ATM mechanics. He inserted a plastic file strip through a small opening near the display, jamming the cash dispenser. Unsuspecting customers, believing the machine to be faulty, would leave after their cash was not dispensed. Katamayya would then retrieve the trapped cash by opening the ATM's top frame.
This particular incident unfolded around 11:30 pm when a customer, noticing the machine's malfunction, decided to wait and observe. His vigilance paid off as he witnessed Katamayya tampering with the ATM. The timely alert to the police through the Dial 100 service led to the thief's capture.
Inspector Ramesh Naidu of the Miyapur police emphasized the need for public vigilance, suspecting Katamayya's involvement in similar crimes across the city. The authorities plan to interrogate the accused to uncover the extent of his activities and alert the RBI about this ATM security vulnerability. This case serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of financial crimes and the critical role of citizen awareness in crime prevention.
