In a show of public dissent, the streets of Kaluvai mandal in Nellore district came alive with a massive rally organized by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The event, titled 'Save Kaluvai', attracted a sea of protesters, including farmers and citizens from various political backgrounds, all united in their demand to halt the proposed merger of Kaluvai, Rapur, and Sydapuram mandals into the Tirupati district.
The YSRCP, led by former Nellore district president Kakani Govardhan Reddy, accused Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu of breaking his promise to keep the Gudur constituency within Nellore. Govardhan Reddy claimed that the Chief Minister's decision to merge these mandals was a calculated move to serve his interests, disregarding the potential regional consequences. He warned that the bifurcation could ignite water disputes, as the water supply to the Podalakur South Feeder Canal, originating from the Kandaleru reservoir, traverses through Kaluvai. With both Kaluvai and Podalakur mandals suffering from drought conditions and relying on the Somasila and Kandaleru reservoirs, any alteration in the current arrangement might trigger a water war between the regions.
The YSRCP leader also highlighted the complexity of land boundaries, stating that approximately 60% of Podalakur mandal's lands extend into the mandals proposed for merger. This, he argued, would complicate revenue administration and exacerbate existing issues. The rally, attended by prominent figures like ZP chairperson Anam Arunamma and Venkatagiri YSRCP in-charge Nedurumalli Ramkumar Reddy, served as a platform for the public to voice their concerns. The party has threatened to intensify their agitation if the government doesn't reconsider its decision.
As the political temperature rises in Nellore, the fate of these mandals hangs in the balance, with the public's outcry echoing through the streets, demanding a resolution that respects their interests and the region's stability.
