In a groundbreaking move, Hyderabad has become the first city in India to offer an online platform for cybercrime victims to file First Information Reports (FIRs). The C-Mitra initiative, launched by the Hyderabad City Police, is a game-changer in the fight against digital fraud, empowering citizens with a convenient and efficient reporting system.
This innovative approach aims to simplify the often-complex process of reporting cybercrimes. Victims can now access a virtual help desk, eliminating the need for physical visits to police stations. The system is designed to be user-friendly, ensuring that citizens can navigate the legal process with ease. When citizens encounter cybercrime, they can now take immediate action from the safety and convenience of their homes.
Here's how it works: Citizens can initiate the process by calling the national cybercrime helpline (1930) or by lodging a complaint on the official website cybercrime.gov.in. Hyderabad City Police's Virtual Police Officers then step in, guiding the complainant through the process. Utilizing Artificial Intelligence, a legally sound complaint is drafted and shared with the citizen for review. Once approved, the complainant prints and signs the document, sending it to the Cyber Crime Police Station via post or courier. Alternatively, a drop-box facility is available for added convenience. Upon receiving the complaint, the police register the FIR and promptly notify the complainant via SMS.
"C-Mitra is a testament to our commitment to modernizing policing and ensuring citizen safety in the digital age," said a spokesperson for the Hyderabad City Police. This initiative is a significant stride towards a more accessible and efficient justice system, particularly in the realm of cybercrime, which has seen a rapid rise in recent years. By embracing technology, Hyderabad is setting a precedent for other cities to follow, potentially reshaping the landscape of cybercrime reporting and response across India.
