Hyderabad's Festive Traffic Frenzy: Sankranti Rush Snarls City Roads

Hyderabad's roads transformed into a bustling sea of vehicles on Friday evening as the annual Sankranti exodus reached its peak. With the festival holidays commencing, the city witnessed a surge in buses, private cars, and cabs, all vying for space on the already congested streets. The traffic police faced a herculean task as the weekend rush compounded the festive exodus, turning the evening commute into a slow-moving procession.

The city's arterial roads became a test of patience for commuters. The Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Dilsukhnagar route towards Vijayawada, the areas surrounding Secunderabad and Kacheguda railway stations, and the SR Nagar-Lakdikapul stretch all bore the brunt of the traffic onslaught. The situation was no better in Cyberabad, the IT corridor, where the exodus of IT professionals added to the chaos. Kukatpally, Moosapet, JNTU, and Miyapur became hotspots of congestion, with vehicles inching forward at a snail's pace.

In a bid to manage the unprecedented traffic, the Hyderabad traffic control room took swift action. Additional personnel were dispatched to key locations, including the MGBS, Secunderabad, and Kacheguda stations, to regulate the flow. The authorities also instructed bus operators to adhere to designated stops and directed private travel operators to relocate pick-up points, easing congestion at major junctions. The focus on private buses operating from Kukatpally, Miyapur, and Gachibowli, as well as the Lingampally railway station, was evident as these areas saw an increased deployment of traffic personnel.

As the night progressed, the traffic frenzy was expected to continue until the early hours. The authorities' challenge lies in ensuring a smooth flow for the returning commuters post-festivities, with the potential for similar congestion in the coming days.
