In a significant drug bust, a 24-year-old dhaba owner was arrested on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway for allegedly supplying opium poppy husk to long-haul truck drivers. This operation, a joint effort by the EAGLE Force and Chityal police, uncovered a lucrative illegal trade targeting a specific demographic.
The accused, Gurmeet Singh, a native of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, managed the Doon Punjabi Dhaba, a popular stop for truckers. Singh's father, who previously ran the establishment, had to return to their hometown due to health issues, leaving Singh in charge. Investigators believe Singh identified a niche market in the demand for opium poppy husk among North Indian truck drivers and seized the opportunity to profit from this illicit trade.
Singh's operation involved purchasing the narcotic at a rate of Rs 1,800 per kg and selling it to truck drivers at a staggering Rs 6,000 per kg, pocketing a substantial Rs 4,200 profit per kg. The authorities' sustained surveillance culminated in a raid on Friday, January 9, where 9 kg of opium poppy husk was seized from a storeroom, with Singh admitting to an initial purchase of 20 kg.
This operation highlights the ingenuity of drug peddlers who exploit various avenues to distribute narcotics. The EAGLE Force and local police's collaborative efforts demonstrate the importance of intelligence-led operations in combating drug trafficking. With the accused now in custody and the contraband secured, the focus shifts to the legal process and the ongoing battle against drug trafficking on India's highways.
