Minister Praises Prison Conditions and Inmate Initiatives

In a surprise visit to the Nellore Central Prison, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha shed light on the often-overlooked positive aspects of the correctional facility. During her inspection, she discovered that inmates are not only well-provided for but also actively contributing to their rehabilitation through various income-generating initiatives.

Anitha's visit revealed a thriving prison industry where inmates are earning a respectable Rs. 7,000 per month by crafting a range of products, from almirahs to soaps and stitched clothing. This financial empowerment is a significant step towards their reintegration into society, offering them a sense of purpose and a means to support themselves. The minister's interaction with prisoners indicated that they are not merely serving time but are actively engaged in productive activities, which could potentially reduce recidivism rates.

The minister also commended the innovative approach of SP Ajitha Vejendla, who has implemented a strategy to deter crime. This involves making rowdy-sheeters march in public streets, a public shaming tactic that might discourage similar criminal behavior. Anitha further emphasized the need for stringent action against anti-social elements, especially in cases involving POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences).

While the Home Minister acknowledged the practice of employing convicted prisoners at petrol bunks run by the police department, she also pointed out the staffing shortages in critical departments like Prisons, Fire, and Police, blaming the previous government for this lapse. Anitha assured that the current administration is taking steps to address this issue, with plans to recruit five thousand people annually into the police department. This move aims to bolster the force and improve public safety, a key priority for the government.
