The Telangana prison system witnessed a significant 12% increase in inmate admissions in 2025, with a staggering 42,566 individuals entering the state's correctional facilities. This surge, revealed in the Prisons Department's annual report, highlights a growing trend in criminal activity, particularly in specific areas of concern.
Cybercrime cases have skyrocketed, with a 135% jump in admissions, indicating a pressing need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and public awareness. The rise in drunk driving cases, up by 152%, also demands immediate attention and stricter enforcement of road safety regulations. These alarming increases underscore the evolving challenges faced by law enforcement and the judicial system.
The report further details a rise in various crime categories, including POCSO, NDPS, extremist-related activities, murder, property offences, and crimes against women. Notably, the majority of inmates are first-time offenders, with 40,090 out of 42,566 admissions falling into this category. This trend raises questions about the effectiveness of current rehabilitation programs and the need for preventative measures to address the root causes of criminal behaviour.
Director General of Prisons, Soumya Mishra, emphasized the state's commitment to inmate welfare, citing initiatives like interest-free loans, legal aid services, and healthcare support. The upcoming Siddipet District Jail, a high-security facility, will further bolster the state's prison infrastructure. However, with the increasing prison population, Telangana's criminal justice system faces a critical juncture, requiring comprehensive strategies to address the surge in various types of crimes and effectively rehabilitate offenders.
