Mumbai's Civic Body Gears Up for Fair Elections: A Massive Crackdown

As the 2026 BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) elections approach, the city's civic body is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a transparent and fair voting process. In a recent development, the BMC has deployed an impressive 148 flying squads and 181 static surveillance teams to maintain law and order. This move comes after a significant overhaul, with officials seizing a staggering Rs 3.1 crore in cash, 55 kg of narcotics worth Rs 44 crore, and 1,237 litres of alcohol valued at Rs 8.3 lakh over just 20 days.

The flying squads are the eyes and ears of the operation, patrolling the wards to detect and deter any suspicious activities, inducements, or violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Simultaneously, static surveillance teams are strategically positioned at critical checkpoints, acting as gatekeepers against the illegal transportation of cash, liquor, and weapons, which could potentially sway voters.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani emphasised the importance of vigilance, urging staff to remain alert and act swiftly against any MCC breaches. The civic body's preparedness is evident in its acquisition of 140 PADU machines, ensuring a seamless vote-counting process even in the face of technical challenges. This is in line with the State Election Commission's guidelines, which mandate the connection of voting units to the main control unit during counting, with PADUs providing backup in case of emergencies.

With the BMC's comprehensive measures, Mumbai's voters can expect a well-organised election process. The additional 300 polling locations, compared to the 2024 Assembly elections, demonstrate the civic body's commitment to convenience and accessibility. As the election draws near, the BMC's efforts to maintain integrity and security will be crucial in upholding the democratic process.
