Meghalaya's Legal Push for a Drug-Free Youth

In a significant step towards addressing the growing drug menace, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, organized a legal awareness campaign in Lawmali Pyllun, shedding light on the recently launched NALSA DAWN Scheme. This initiative, a collaborative effort with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), aims to empower the youth with knowledge about their legal rights and support systems in the battle against drug abuse.

The event, held on National Youth Day 2026, was a comprehensive effort to educate the community. MM Shullai, Legal Aid Counsel of DLSA, elucidated the scheme's objectives, emphasizing the accessibility of free legal services, including the NALSA Helpline and the LSMS portal. The audience also received a stark reminder of the devastating impact of drug abuse on youth, with a lecture detailing the physical and mental health repercussions and the stringent legal consequences under the NDPS Act.

The program further underscored the collaborative nature of the fight against drugs, with the involvement of various entities. Shullai revealed that similar awareness drives are being conducted across the district, in partnership with local community leaders (Dorbar Shnongs), MIMHANS, the Social Welfare department, and the police. This integrated approach aims to ensure that those affected by drug addiction are not only aware of the legal repercussions but also know where to turn for help and rehabilitation.

The event concluded with a call to action from the chairman of Synjuk Ki Seng Samla Shnong, who urged collective community action to protect the youth from the clutches of drug abuse, marking a significant stride in Meghalaya's journey towards a drug-free society.
