Nellore's Sankranti Celebrations: A Decade's Wait for Festive Cheer

In a vibrant display of tradition and community spirit, the streets of Nellore district came alive after a decade-long hiatus, as Sankranti festivities took centre stage. The three-day celebration, marking the harvest festival, brought a much-needed boost to the local economy and a sense of joy to farmers, traders, and residents alike. With recent adequate rainfall promising a bountiful harvest, the stage was set for a grand revival of this ancient tradition.

The city's markets, particularly those along Trunk Road, Chinna Bazaar, Kapu Street, and the aptly named Sunday Market, buzzed with activity until late into the night. The sound of bustling shoppers filled the air as they navigated the crowded alleys, a stark contrast to the usual pace of life. The changing trends were evident, with the younger generation opting for ready-made garments over tailored attire, a testament to evolving lifestyles and busy schedules. This shift resulted in an unprecedented surge in menswear shops, with leading malls like Rukmini Showroom, Chennai Silks, and JC Mall offering enticing discounts to lure customers.

The economic impact was significant, with an estimated Rs30 crore worth of business transacted in the city since Christmas. Traders like Menta Suresh, owner of Dinesh Cut Pieces, attributed this boom to the farmers' optimism about the upcoming harvest. The release of social security pensions and clearance of dues by the government further fuelled the festive spirit and spending power. As the celebrations culminated with Bhogi Panduga, bonfires lit up the early morning skies, and the district's leaders, including Ministers Anam Ramanarayana and Ponguru Narayana, conveyed their Sankranti greetings to the people. The festival concluded on a spiritual note with the Andal Utsavam at the Sri Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy temple, leaving the community with a sense of hope and renewal.
