In a significant development in the war against drug trafficking, a Special NDPS Court in Madhya Pradesh has handed down a severe sentence to two inter-state drug traffickers, sending a powerful message to those involved in the illicit trade. The court's decision to imprison Zakir and Liyakat Ali for 15 years and fine them Rs 1.5 lakh each is a testament to the state's commitment to eradicating the drug menace.
The two men, residents of Bhopal, were arrested on December 29, 2022, while transporting a substantial quantity of ganja, weighing 109.150 kg, in their car. The NCB's Indore Zone officers intercepted their vehicle at the Khiriya Toll Plaza on the Jabalpur-Bhopal Highway (NH-44) in Raisen district, leading to their apprehension. The investigation revealed that the ganja originated from Sonepur in Odisha and was destined for Bhopal, indicating an organized inter-state drug trafficking network.
In an unrelated case, the same court sentenced Vivek Kumar Singh, a Pune resident, to five years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 50,000 fine. Singh was arrested on March 31, 2024, while carrying 675 grams of charas, which was sourced from Kullu in Himachal Pradesh and intended for Pune, Maharashtra. This case further highlights the NCB's efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks across the country.
The NCB's proactive approach in intercepting and investigating these cases sends a clear signal that drug trafficking will not be tolerated. As the war on drugs intensifies, the NCB's vigilance and the judiciary's strict sentencing are crucial in deterring potential offenders and safeguarding society from the devastating effects of illicit substances.
